Paddle back in time and follow the same route of the Danish-Norwegian privateers and pirates, and their fight against the British and the Swedes during the Napoleon war. These battles lead up to Norway’s independence. We will visit historic locations with tales and legends of treasures and epic naval skirmishes. You will get a glimpse of what coast-life was like through seeing, smelling and tasting wild Nordic cuisine. We will then jump forward into history, to the Second World War, visiting German bunkers from the occupation time.
In Short
We start our journey from Ivarsand and paddle along the coast in the archipelago. Depending on the weather we have different options to either paddle on the inside or the outside. We will stay at primitive camping spots with varying facilities. On the tour, you will learn about the local culture and history as well as basic expedition skills such as; how to pack a kayak, how to set up camp, routines on how to be comfortable on a multi-day trip, how to supplement your meals with nature’s pantry.
Everyone meets at the Ivarhavn parking lot at 10.00. We start with a welcome and briefing where everyone will get a kayak and equipment, our safety routines, the plan for the tour and how to pack the kayak. At 12.00 we will do a quick warm-up before launching on the water. We start paddling southwest towards the first camp spot at Gumøy. Today’s paddle is approximately 12km. On our way to camp, we will stop by the historic fortification, Trolldalen Fort. At the camp spot, there will be toilet-facilities.
